Val's View: Wearable Art as Self-Expression

Ever since I can remember, I have loved the creative outlet of fashion. In recent years, the fusion of art into clothing has transformed the wearer into their very own canvas. New ways of printing on textiles have influenced designs that can make a personal statement. It’s a great way to show your style and taste without saying a word.

If you like to stand out, what better way than wearing a bold garment and accessories? I love hats and silk flowers and sometimes I will embellish my clothing to elevate my look. I can build an outfit around a great pair of shoes or a fun bag. Drink upstream from the herd once and awhile. Nonconformity is fun, especially at the time in life where we have the freedom to do it. After all, how many more yoga outfits do we need on the street?

I love a theme so if I’m going to a gallery or restaurant, I will find looks that fit the genre. That way, I will be fully immersed in my experience. If I decide to capture a photo, it all works together.

I love food and architecture so they both can set the tone for my look. Graphic designs and unusual textures are a great jumping off point. I like to buy jewelry from local artisans and combine new pieces with upcycled ones.
