Things like our hair color and complexion change as we age, so if you find yourself wondering why your favorite colors or go-to clothing staples no longer look as good as they used to, that could be partially why.
Here at Anthony’s, we are big on owning your personal style, whatever that may be, but if you feel like your wardrobe needs a boost when it comes to the variety of colors in your normal rotation, then we are here to help.
In this blog post, we’ll talk all about finding out what kinds of colors look best on you and then building a wardrobe based on that. Let’s dive in!
Understanding Your Unique Complexion & Features
Understanding your ideal wardrobe color palette is dependent upon first understanding your complexion and features.
There are three important personal attributes to think about when building an ideal wardrobe color palette:
- Your eye color
- Your hair color
- Your skin tone
Wearing the wrong mix of colors for your unique complexion, hair color, and eye color can make you look washed out or pale. Wearing the right mix of colors, meanwhile, can help you exude health and effervescence while making your features pop.
A common way of thinking about how to find your color palette for your clothes is to think about it in terms of “seasons”. In other words, certain traits would make you an “Autumn” versus your neighbor a “Spring”, “Summer”, or “Winter”.
- Start by thinking about your skin tone, which will be classified as either warm, cool, or neutral.
- Next, determine your season by accounting for your eye and hair color.
Fashion stylist Anuschka Arees offers a helpful description of each season to get you started:

Spring: Clear, Light, Warm
- Skin: Clear, warm undertone. Cheeks turn a peachy color when you blush. Light skin for your ethnicity.
- Hair: Light blonde to medium brown or strawberry blonde. Golden or red undertones.
- Eyes: Clear blue, turquoise, green, hazel, or light brown.
Summer: Soft, Light, Cool
- Skin: Cool undertone. Low contrast between hair & skin. Cheeks turn a cool, rosy color when you blush.
- Hair: Light blonde to medium brown. Cool, ashy undertones.
- Eyes: Blue, gray-blue, cool green, gray-brown, slate.
Autumn: Soft, Deep, Warm
- Skin: Warm, golden undertone. Rich overall coloring. Low contrast between skin, hair, and eyes.
- Hair: Mid-brown to black, or medium to deep red. Golden or red undertones.
- Eyes: Blue, gray-blue, cool green, gray-brown, slate.
Winter: Clear, Deep, Cool
- Skin: Cool or olive undertones. High contrast between skin, hair, and eyes or a deep overall coloring.
- Hair: Ashy mid-brown or dark brown to black. Cool undertones.
- Eyes: Mid-brown to black-brown, gray-blue, clear blue, cool green.
If you’re confused about which season you fall into, that’s because these seasons do exist on a continuum.
Your skin tone could, therefore, have some olive undertones but still be closer to neutral, making you a mix of autumn and spring.
You could also have a cool skin tone closer to a winter with blonde or medium brown hair closer to a summer.
In other words, you could have most, but not all features of one type.
Pro Tip: For a deeper understanding of your season, recruiting a personal stylist can be helpful.
Finding the Best Clothing Colors for Your Skin Tone & Features
Once you’ve learned your season, it’s time to find your clothing color palette.
Here are some of the colors that work best for each color season:
- Spring: Bright, warm hues like coral, golden yellow, and aqua.
- Summer: Soft pastels and muted shades such as lavender, blush pink, and dove gray.
- Autumn: Earthy tones like burnt orange, olive green, and chocolate brown.
- Winter: Jewel tones like sapphire blue and emerald green, or icy shades like silver and pure white.
